A Wonderful Christmas Gift: Michael has no visible active cancer.
He is NOT cancer free, but His first hurdle has been crossed...
(Dated: Dec 24, 11:50 a.m.)
Dear Friend,
I'm writing to you this Christmas Eve day from Michael's hospital room at St. Jude with GREAT NEWS. (We should be discharged soon, and be home for Christmas Eve and Christmas day with our family. Thank you Lord Jesus!)
Yesterday, December 23, the doctors did PET and CT scans, and an MRI on Michael to see how he had responded to the chemotherapy thus far.
The tests all showed that Michael has no visibly active cancer in his body. This is a HUGE blessing, a wonderful answer to prayer, and a major milestone in a long journey. That means that the chemotherapy protocol is working as it is supposed to, and his body is responding as the doctors hoped it would. This is an indispensable step in the long process of his healing.
Let me explain clearly what this means. (When Andrea and I told the four boys, one of them said: "So, Michael does not have cancer any more!?" Then we had to explain..."No, it means...")
Doctors explain it this way: "We spend the first 3 months killing 99% of the cancer, and spend the next two years hunting down and killing the remaining 1%." It is that sneaky, "lurk in the shadows" 1% of cancer cells that must be found and destroyed. They are the ones that mutate, and if left alone, would cause a relapse, with an even more aggressive cell structure.
The problem is that science has not yet developed the tools to see that 1%. They know they are still there in his body, active and alive, but they cannot see them.
So, Michael is NOT "cancer free." They know it is there, and they know they have to maintain the active "carpet bombing" of that 1%. And they know if they are successful, he will live.
That said, this report is critical, JOYFUL news. Our prayers are being answered. The chemo is working, and Michael has NO visible cancer in any of the five locations that he had it when he was first diagnosed: his knee, pelvis, rib, liver, and pancreas all report novisibly active cancer. Thank you God!
So, as crazy as it seems, after Christmas Michael will begin a 58 day chemo protocol that is very intense...very aggressive...but, THAT is for another email.
Today, we wanted to pass on the joyful news to you, and thank you for your prayers for our little man. And we beg you, PLEASE keep praying.
We wish you a most blessed Christmas day, and 12 days of Christmas. Remember, Christmas is a 12 day feast. Let us rejoice that God became a man, to redeem us from our sins. Blessed be the name of the Holy Infant, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Merry Christmas, dear friend.
